Mary Joan Schultheisz, Host of SOHO Today

Mary Joan is the co-founder of two successful small businesses: award-winning interactive media company NuZoo Media, and recently formed CandidatesWebSites.com.

She has experienced firsthand the frustration and elation of running a small business in a competitive industry during the boom and bust of the economy. On SOHO Today she shares her experiences with you along with many experts in a variety of fields including taxes, financing, business plans, and finding qualified employees.

Mary Joan has a bachelor's degree in communications from Temple University, Philadelphia, and a certificate in integrated marketing from the University of Chicago. Additionally, she has studied multimedia at the University of Chicago and Loyola University, Chicago. She has worked in the news, telecommunications, financial services and health industries. Mary Joan also serves on the Robert Morris College Institute of Art and Design Advisory Board.

Small Businesses in the U.S.

Generally speaking small businesses have up to 100 employees. According to the U.S. Census Bureau in 2004:

• About three quarters of all U.S. business firms had no payroll. Most were self-employed persons operating unincorporated businesses
• There were almost 20 Million (19,523,741) Nonemployer firms
• There were almost 5 Million Firms with up to 100 employees (4,980,165)

That adds up to about 99% of all businesses in the U.S. being small businesses.
